Therapy Modalities
What Are Therapy Modalities?
There are many types of therapy equipment that have been used by chiropractors and physical therapists alike. These therapies can help us control pain, reduce inflammation and increase circulation. They are especially useful in the acute phases of care.
The type, size and location of the condition are all factors in determining which modalities we want to use, if any.
The main modalities we use are Ultrasound, Interferential Current and Galvanic Current.

3 Primary Modalities We Use
Ultrasound
This modality uses soundwaves to produce deep penetrating heat. This increases circulation to aid in tissue healing. We find it helpful in conditions such as tendonitis and some spinal conditions.
Interferential Current
This is particularly useful when treating large areas. Its three primary functions are to reduce inflammation, increase circulation, and reduce pain by stimulating the production of endorphins and/or enkephalins. It produces a tingling sensation that is generally comforting to the patient.
Low Volt Galvanic Current
We find this particularly effective when treating disc and sciatic pain. The disc can leak fluid and produces a burning pain due chemical irritation around the nerve. Positive galvanic current can push out the pain producing chemicals and sedate the nerve.
