Multidisciplinary rehabilitation has been shown to be effective in chronic low back pain patients, but is has primarily been studied in working age people.

So why might there be a difference in people under 65 and those over 65 years old? People over 65 years old will typically have more comorbidities. Comorbidities are conditions or diseases in addition to chronic low back pain that we are looking at.  People over 65 are typically going to have additional arthritic change compared to younger people.

A June 2021 study compared multidisciplinary treatment in a group of patients over 65 to group of patients under 65.  They found similar improvements in both pain and disability in patients over 65 compared to younger patients for at least 1 year.

These finding support the idea of offering these services to a growing number of older chronic low back pain patients.
